“The Sun Also Rises” is a dynamic, web/based system enabling the release of regrets through a digital ritual, similar to lighting a candle in a temple. My goal is to demonstrate the potential of web art to serve as a spiritual companion. As an exploration of this, I created  ‘Cyber Monk’, driven by the input of people’s regret stories, which are interpreted computationally into personalized and ritualized contents that allow for reflection and release.

If you have a regret and want to let it go, dial 424-373-4738(4243-REGRET). ‘Cyber Monk’ is activated real time to listen to your regrets and perform personalized rituals in the form of personalized animated, shadow art derived from your spoken regrets. At the same time, Cyber Monk aggregates each personalized ritual from all the participants and streams them as a collective landscape of regret. You can see through this collective landscape that you are not alone, that regret is universal, a realization that is known to bring solace in overcoming negative emotions.

Story

dear regret,

as the sun goes down, the shadow disappears.

And the sun also rises, the shadow will still be there, just like our past.

we can never get rid of our past.

But by suggesting this ritual to our past, I wanted to help people to let go off their regret in the past,

and move on with their lives, by appreciating the universality of regret.

You are not alone,

The sun also rises.

from changyeon, who has regrets just like you.

hi, my name is brian. i have a regret that goes back over 40 years. and my father and my grandfather were both out alcoholic, and they both killed themselves will know i was 8 years old i may have promised myself that i would never drink. and i had the intuition that it wasn’t a good idea. since it was brought to the family. however by the time i was 16years old i did have that drink and have been drinking ever since and it’s basically ruined my life. so that’s pretty much my regrets. good luck with your project. bye.

my biggest regret in life is probably not paying much attention to my daughter when she was small. i was really in denial that i was a father, and i really missed out on a great time in her life. and now that her or her mother and i are divorced, i don’t see her very much.
